Accsys Engages With Students, Calls For More Internships In The Marketplace
Management at Accsys, a national supplier of payroll, HR, Time & Attendance and Access Control solutions, has again stressed the importance of apprenticeship as a means to combat a shortage of skills within industry and lack of critical development.
Aug 17, 2009 – Speaking at a recent Intern Day Seminar hosted by the company for nineteen learners from the Midrand Graduate Institute (MGI), with whom Accsys has a proud track record of success with regard to a jointly initiated apprenticeship program, Teryl Schroenn, CEO at Accsys, underlined the significance of these efforts to help people gain experience whilst simultaneously pursuing a qualification.
“There is no doubt that an initiative in place that has the flexibility and structure to allow individuals to maintain a course of study and gain valuable work experience will make a difference to the skills availability situation we find ourselves in,” said Schroenn.
The group of MGI learners also participated in presentations that ranged from business etiquette in the workplace – rules and regulations, professional behaviour etc. – to a company-focused overview, entitled ‘the Accsys Way, illustrating how this successful company has entrenched itself at the forefront of highly competitive markets involving the development and application of fundamental business management solutions.
A dominating theme for the day was the significance of Human Resource development and how to improve ‘marketability’ to would-be employers, described by management as a key principle to socio-economic development in South Africa going forward.
“Our principle aim with the day was also to show the convergence of technology and solution development in equipping the business leaders of tomorrow to improve their management of people. I believe this message was delivered accurately and the message certainly hit home,” added Schroenn.
Accsys is a recognised education partner to several secondary and tertiary institutions and uses this role to inform learners, demonstrate what can be achieved in the workplace and offer a realistic, practical viewpoint of industry to prospective job-seekers.
“We believe that the advantages of this campaign filter through to other sectors and areas of requirement in the greater marketplace. Two learners from the Midrand Graduate Institute recently joined us as part of a two and a half-week internship, and I am pleased to say that they both enjoyed the experience and benefited enormously from the exposure to the day-to-day operations at Accsys. We anticipate that apprenticeship and internship-style initiatives will grow in appeal within corporate South Africa as companies and businesses tackle the economic challenges ahead,” says Schroenn.
The two learners, Shathani Ndzinge and Angelina Semetsi, both offered very positive feedback when asked about their experience.
“I like that Accsys gives training to its employees, providing knowledge that no-one can take away,” says Ndzinge. “This empowers you as an individual, and in a changing environment, one has to keep up with what is new in the market. The human resource department was very interesting to me, I am studying this at the moment and I was able to benefit from exposure to the hands-on practicalities of human resource development.”
Semetsi concurred. “I realise that education is a very big part of Accsys and employees are fully trained. The company is very professional and encourage initiative, career progress and individual development.”
